South Dakota schools could lose more than $18 million in federal funding if the U.S. House Appropriations Committee gets its way.
Budget negotiations will be the focus of Congress when it returns to session. Several FY26 items will be taken up and voted on in January, including education funding. We need Senate Republican Leader John Thune to stand up for South Dakota’s students.
The Senate Appropriations Committee has taken a responsible approach. Its FY26 education bill maintains funding for nearly all key programs and increases both Title I and IDEA grants by $50 million. This bipartisan proposal demonstrates that fiscal responsibility and strong schools are not mutually exclusive.
But House bill (H.R. 5304) would:
Cut Title I funding by $3.78 billion nationally, undermining support for students from low-income families
Eliminates programs serving students with disabilities, English learners, and vulnerable children
Strips over $18 million from South Dakota—threatening after-school programs, special education…
